ABOUT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

OUR MISSION AND HISTORY

First Baptist Church has been serving the Sterling and surrounding community for over 100 years. Our mission is to share the love of Christ with everyone we encounter and to make disciples of all nations. We believe in the authority of Scripture and strive to follow God's Word in all that we do. Join us in worship, fellowship, and service to our community.

Our Mission and History
Our Beliefs

OUR BELIEFS

First Baptist Church is founded on and grounded in the Word of God. We believe that in the Bible, God has spoken finally and completely, and that all matters of genuine Christian faith are found exclusively in the Bible. We are a church that preaches the Bible, reads the Bible, studies the Bible, and believes the Bible.

At the center of our faith is the cross of Jesus Christ. We believe it was the means by which God the Father placed all of our sin upon His Son for our salvation. The cross is therefore the symbol of the gospel, the message by which the Holy Spirit stirs regenerating faith in the hearts of those who hear it.

Worship is what we do, because it is what we will do forever. We enjoy two different worship styles at First Baptist combined into each service, because we understand that the content of worship is the most important aspect of it. We believe that genuine Christians are genuinely born again to be worshipers of God forever.

STATEMENT OF FAITH

  1. God is the one and only true God who created all things and exists for all eternity in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Lev 19:2, 2 Cor 13:14).

  2. The Bible is the inspired, infallible, complete, and final word of God (2 Tim 3:16-17, 2 Pet 1:21).

  3. People are in violation of God’s righteous requirements and his holy character (Ps 14:2-3, Rom 3:23, 1 John 1:8).

  4. Jesus Christ, born of a Virgin, came to pay the penalty for man’s sin through his substitutionary death on the cross, and his bodily resurrection ensures the resurrection of all believers (John 1:29, 3:17, 14:6, 2 Cor 5:21, Matt 1:18).

  5. Salvation is offered as a free gift to sinners that is sealed by God with His Spirit (Rom 3:24-25a, Acts 13:38-39, John 3:5-6, Rom 8:9, Eph 1:14).

  6. Response to Salvation is by individual faith, believing in God’s Word and not trusting in any personal works whatsoever, but trusting only in the atoning death of Jesus Christ alone (Heb 11:6, Acts 2:38, John 3:16,18, 1 Cor 1:21, 15:1-2).

Statement of Faith

STATEMENT ON MARRIAGE, GENDER & SEXUALITY

We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God (Gen 1:26-27). Rejection of one's biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person.

We believe that the term "marriage" has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Gen. 2:18-25). We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other (1 Cor. 6:18; 7:2-5; Heb. 13:4). We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity by engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.

We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God (Matt. 15:18-20; 1 Cor. 6:9-10).

We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of First Baptist Church as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a biblical role model to the First Baptist Church members and community, it is imperative that all persons employed by First Baptist Church in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, agree to and abide by this Statement on Marriage, Gender and Sexuality (Matt. 5:16; Phil. 2:14-16; 1 Thess. 5:22).

We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ (Acts 3:19-21; Rom. 10:9-10, 1 Cor. 6:9-11).

We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31). Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of First Baptist Church.
